Great drawings always come from the basics. Basically, we have these categories that builds up a drawing; these includes lines, shapes, perspective, value, and edge. In other words, we call them the elements of arts, but since we are mainly focus on pencil techniques, we do not use the element color in this situation. On this blog post, I will show a step-by-step guide to basic drawing and I will try show some video clips to recall the basics of lines, shapes, forms, and how to add details  like shadow to bring your drawing to life with a little practice. This will  be a good start  for learning drawing.

First, we need a pencil, an eraser, and a drawing paper or sketch pad. In this situation, we will try to challenge our drawing skills  by just using a single type of pencil which is a 2b pencil. By using a single type of pencil, beginners can learn everything from drawing basics, from drawing lines, and shapes to shading techniques that will take their drawing to another level.

The basic element of a drawing is line. Line is a set of points that moves from a single direction to another. Line varies from size, length, and pattern.

The next category is shape. Shapes are object form surrounded by edges or outline. In other words, it is an enclosed space or a 2D flat area bounded by outer line surface.

If we have shapes, we also have forms. Forms are visual element of a drawing that refers to the illusion of a 3D object on a 2D surface.

To make the forms appear more realistic, we add the detail what we called shadow. Shadow is a dark side on an object that is not facing the light opposite from the light source that reveals the true form and mass of the object's shape.

Finally, after the basic lines, shapes, and forms, we will try now to draw objects applying the basic elements and details for emphasizing the object's form and mass.

Another is that in shading, there are different types of shading that we can use in our drawing. Basically, there are six shading methods, these includes hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, scribbling, circling, blending.✍

Hatching Method

Hatching is the method of shading areas of a drawing with fine parallel lines.
Cross-hatching Method

Cross-hatching method is like hatching method, but instead of parallel lines, intersecting lines are used in the drawing.

Stippling Method

Stippling method is a drawing technique in which light and dark areas of a drawing is created by using dots.

Scribbling Method

Scribbling is a drawing technique where it uses random, uncontrolled lines to create patterns and textures.

Circling Method

Circling method is a pencil technique that uses small circular motions to create pigment in the drawing.

Blending/Smudging Method

Blending or smudging method is a pencil drawing technique of shading by means of rubbing in the paper using either finger or smudging tool like blending stamp.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Practicing the basics is always  better than proceeding to complex. If you know what you are trying to draw, you are on the correct place. Whether you are learning the basics of drawing all at once, the most important factor in mastering the basics is consistent practice and determination. This is because you have a vison of what you want to create, and in order to attain it you need to learn the basic skills before you can draw with skill and imagination. Skipping the basics will make you try and act that it will take you a long time to finally get the outcome of drawing you want.
